From School Radio to RTÉ

From the student radio station to RTE News: Six One, Sharon Tobin has been consuming and loving broadcast media for as long as she can remember.

Tobin became well-acquainted with the principles of broadcasting in her early years working with the school radio station at her school in Coolmine, Dublin. With plans to become a radio DJ, Sharon embarked on a radio and journalism course at Ballyfermot College of Further Education, then known as Ballyfermot Senior College.

Upon graduation, a lecturer of Tobin’s suggested she put together a demo tape and circulate it among newsrooms in Ireland, and she did just that. While spending an exciting six months in the US, the tapes were sent to a number of stations in Ireland.

On her return home, Sharon landed her first job with East Coast FM. After 18 months there, Tobin was offered the role of newsreader with TV3 News.

In September 2019, Tobin earned a spot on RTE News: Six One and since the beginning of the pandemic in Ireland, Sharon has been travelling nationwide to tell the stories of those who often go unheard.

Her time at Ballyfermot College of Further Education set Sharon up with the skills, knowledge and technique to embark on a glittering career to date and an exciting one to come.
